AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)

AEO is the practice of shaping content so AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews quote it directly. It rewards clear structure, stated facts and self-contained answers rather than keyword repetition, because these systems extract passages instead of ranking pages.

Why it matters for your rankings

Search is splitting into two jobs. Traditional SEO wins a click from a results page. AEO wins a mention inside an answer that may never produce a click at all, but does shape what the buyer believes before they ever reach your site.

That matters commercially because assistants now sit between your prospect and your website. If a competitor is cited as the source on your category's core question, they define the criteria the buyer uses to judge everyone else, including you. Winning citations is cheap while most sites still write for crawlers only, and it compounds: the phrasing an engine finds easiest to lift is usually the phrasing a human finds easiest to read.

How to check it on your site

Ask the engines about your category

Query ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews with the questions your buyers actually ask. Record which domains get named. That list is your real AEO competitor set, and it is often different from your organic one.

Check your pages answer in one passage

Open your key pages and find the single paragraph that answers the page's core question. If the answer is spread over four sections, no engine can lift it cleanly. Tighten it to 40 to 60 words directly under a matching heading.

Confirm the facts are stated, not implied

Engines quote explicit claims: numbers, dates, definitions, named entities. Replace vague phrasing like 'fast turnaround' with 'delivered in 4 to 5 business days'.

Validate your structured data

Run Google's Rich Results Test on your key templates. Article, FAQPage, Product and Organization markup all give answer engines a machine-readable version of what your page claims.
