Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile is the free listing that controls how your business appears in Google Maps and the local pack. Categories, reviews, hours, photos and posts all feed it. For businesses with a physical presence it often outranks the website itself.

Why it matters for your rankings

For local businesses the profile is frequently more valuable than the website. It appears above organic results, shows reviews and directions, and lets people call or book without visiting your site at all.

Primary category is the single most influential field and the one most often chosen carelessly. Picking 'Marketing Agency' rather than 'Internet Marketing Service' can change which searches you appear in entirely. Reviews matter both in volume and recency, and responses are visible to prospects reading them. The profile is also uniquely vulnerable: competitors and members of the public can suggest edits to your hours, address and even category, and those changes can go live without notifying you.

How to check it on your site

Audit the primary category

Open your profile and compare your primary category against the businesses ranking above you in the local pack for your main search.

Complete every field

Hours, attributes, services, products, description and photos. Google favours complete profiles, and gaps look like inactivity.

Monitor for unauthorised edits

Check monthly for user-suggested changes to hours, address or category, which apply automatically if unchallenged.

Build a review cadence

Ask systematically after service delivery and respond to every review. Recency counts, not just total volume.
