Domain Rating

Domain Rating is Ahrefs' 0 to 100 measure of how strong a website's backlink profile is, based on the quantity and quality of linking domains. Like Domain Authority it is a third-party estimate rather than anything Google itself publishes or uses to rank pages.

Why it matters for your rankings

Domain Rating is the most quoted number in link building, largely because Ahrefs has the largest link index. It is a reasonable proxy for how much link equity a site can pass, which is why guest post sellers price by it.

Its blind spot is relevance. DR measures link strength alone, with no notion of subject. A DR 80 general news site and a DR 40 specialist industry publication can be worth the opposite of what the numbers suggest for a niche business. It also says nothing about traffic. Plenty of high-DR domains have been stripped of rankings and still show a strong score from historic links, which is exactly the profile of an expired domain repurposed for link selling.

How to check it on your site

Check DR alongside organic traffic

In Ahrefs, a site with high DR but negligible organic traffic is usually a link farm or a penalised domain.

Compare topical relevance

Look at what the linking site actually publishes. A relevant DR 40 link normally beats an irrelevant DR 75 one.

Watch for sudden DR jumps

Rapid increases without matching press coverage usually mean purchased links rather than earned editorial mentions, which is a reason to avoid the site.

Use it for prioritisation only

Rank outreach targets by DR, but qualify each one by relevance and real audience before pitching.
