Search Volume

Search volume estimates how many times a term is searched per month. Every tool reports a modelled figure rather than a true count, and they disagree substantially. Treat it as a rough order of magnitude, never as a precise number.

Why it matters for your rankings

Search volume is the most trusted and least accurate number in SEO. Tools extrapolate from clickstream samples and Google's own banded data, so two reputable tools can differ by a factor of three on the same term.

Chasing volume also misreads value. A high-volume term with no buying intent produces traffic that never converts, while a term with two hundred monthly searches from qualified buyers can carry a business. Zero-volume terms are frequently mislabelled too: tools round small numbers down, so genuinely valuable long-tail queries appear to have no demand at all. The honest use is comparative, ranking candidate terms against each other rather than forecasting traffic from the absolute figure.

How to check it on your site

Compare two tools

Check the same term in Ahrefs and Semrush. Large disagreement is normal and tells you to treat both loosely.

Validate against Search Console

Your own impression data is the most accurate volume signal available for terms you already rank for.

Do not dismiss zero-volume terms

Specific, low-volume queries often convert best and are rounded to zero by tools.

Weight by intent and value

Multiply estimated volume by realistic conversion likelihood before deciding what to build.
