Rank Tracking

Rank tracking monitors your positions for a set of target keywords over time. It is the most reported SEO metric and one of the least reliable, because results now vary by location, device, personalisation and which SERP features happen to be present.

Why it matters for your rankings

A single ranking number is a fiction. The same query returns different results depending on where the searcher is, what device they use, and what Google decides to show above the organic listings that day.

This makes rank tracking useful for direction and misleading as a headline. A report showing position three means little if an AI overview, four ads and a local pack sit above you, pushing the first organic result below the fold. Rankings also lag business outcomes: positions can improve while revenue does not, if the terms gaining ground have no commercial intent. Tracked sensibly, as a trend across a grouped set of commercially relevant terms alongside clicks and conversions, it earns its place.

How to check it on your site

Track groups, not individual terms

Monitor average position across a themed set. Individual keyword movement is mostly noise.

Set location and device correctly

For local businesses, track from the actual service area rather than a national default.

Record SERP features

Note whether ads, AI overviews or packs sit above you. Position three below all of them is not position three.

Validate against Search Console

Google's own average position data is the reference point when your tracker disagrees.
