QDF (Query Deserves Freshness)
Query Deserves Freshness is Google's behaviour of favouring recent content whenever a topic shows a sudden spike in public interest. It explains why news, product launches and trending subjects reshuffle their results far faster than stable evergreen queries ever do.
Why it matters for your rankings
QDF determines whether recency is worth chasing for a given query. On breaking topics a page published today can outrank an established authority immediately, because freshness temporarily outweighs accumulated links.
On stable queries the opposite holds, and republishing an evergreen guide with a new date achieves nothing. Knowing which category a query falls into prevents wasted effort in both directions: missing a time-sensitive opportunity, or endlessly re-dating content where freshness is not a factor. The signal is readable directly from the results page. If the top listings carry dates from the past few days, freshness matters. If they are years old and still ranking, it does not.
How to check it on your site
Read the dates on page one
Recent dates across the top results mean the query rewards freshness. Older results mean depth matters more.
Identify your time-sensitive topics
Industry news, algorithm updates, pricing changes and annual guides all benefit from fast publication.
Update genuinely for fresh queries
New information and current examples count. Changing the displayed date alone does not.
Do not chase freshness everywhere
For genuinely evergreen topics, comprehensiveness and accumulated links outperform recency every time, so re-dating those pages is wasted effort.
