Content Freshness

Content freshness is how recently a page was meaningfully updated. It matters greatly for time-sensitive topics and barely at all for stable ones, which is why blanket re-dating strategies produce no benefit whatsoever and can quietly cost you real credibility.

Why it matters for your rankings

Freshness is query-dependent rather than universal. For anything involving prices, tools, statistics or fast-moving professional practice, an old page loses to a current one regardless of how much depth it has.

For stable topics it is close to irrelevant, and this is where teams waste effort. Changing a published date without changing the content does not improve rankings, and if readers notice it damages trust. The productive interpretation is that freshness signals reliability rather than recency for its own sake. A page reviewed and genuinely corrected six months ago is more trustworthy than one re-dated yesterday with the same outdated screenshots and prices.

How to check it on your site

Identify time-sensitive pages

Anything containing a year, price, tool screenshot or statistic has a predictable shelf life.

Update substantively

Replace outdated figures, refresh screenshots, add what changed and remove what is no longer true.

Show honest dates

Display a last reviewed date that reflects real editorial work rather than the last deploy.

Leave evergreen pages alone

Where the SERP shows old pages still ranking, freshness is not the lever to pull.
