Title Tag
The title tag is the HTML element defining a page's title. It appears as the clickable headline in search results and in the browser tab. It remains one of the strongest on-page relevance signals and the biggest influence on click-through rate.
Why it matters for your rankings
Title tags do two jobs at once: they tell Google what the page is about and persuade a human to click. Optimising for only one of those is the most common on-page mistake.
Google rewrites titles on a substantial share of results, usually when yours is too long, keyword-stuffed, or a poor match for the query. That is a signal worth reading rather than fighting. Titles are also the cheapest test available in SEO, since a rewrite takes minutes and effects appear within weeks. The recurring failures are boilerplate brand suffixes eating the character budget, near-identical titles across templates, and pages whose target term never appears in the title at all.
How to check it on your site
Crawl for duplicates and length
Screaming Frog's Page Titles tab flags missing, duplicate and over-length titles in one report.
Check which ones Google rewrites
Search your key terms and compare the displayed title against your written one. Rewrites indicate a mismatch.
Front-load the primary term
Put the term the page targets near the start, where both readers and engines weight it most.
Test on high-impression pages
Rewrite titles for pages with many impressions and low CTR first, and measure 28 days either side.
