Programmatic SEO
Programmatic SEO means generating large numbers of search-targeted pages from templates and a structured data source. Done well it captures genuine long-tail demand at scale. Done badly it produces thin, near-identical pages that trigger Google's scaled content abuse policies instead.
Why it matters for your rankings
Programmatic SEO works when each generated page answers a real query with genuinely distinct data. Property listings by suburb, flight routes and software integrations all have real demand and real differences between pages.
It fails when the template is the only content and the variable is a swapped city name. Google has become considerably better at recognising mass-produced pages with no unique value, and its March 2024 spam policy on scaled content abuse targets exactly this. The deciding question is whether a page would be worth publishing if you had built it by hand. If the answer is no for most of the set, generating ten thousand of them multiplies the problem rather than the opportunity.
How to check it on your site
Verify demand per page
Check that individual variants have actual search volume before generating them, rather than assuming the pattern scales.
Ensure each page has unique data
Every page needs substantive information that differs beyond the swapped variable in the heading.
Start small and measure
Publish a hundred pages, check indexation and rankings after six weeks, then scale only what worked.
Monitor indexation rate
If Google indexes a small fraction of what you publish, it is signalling that the pages are not worth keeping.
