Landing Page
A landing page is any page where a visitor first arrives on your site. In SEO it usually means a page built to rank for a specific query and convert that visitor, with its content, structure and call to action all aimed at one intent.
Why it matters for your rankings
Most visitors never see your homepage. They land deep in the site from a search, which means every ranking page is a first impression and has to work without the context the rest of your site would provide.
That changes what a page needs to contain. It must establish who you are, answer the query it ranked for, and offer a next step, all without assuming prior navigation. The common failure is optimising a page for search and forgetting it also has to sell. Pages that rank well and convert badly are extremely common, and the traffic they earn flatters reports while contributing nothing to revenue. Ranking is the beginning of the job rather than the end of it.
How to check it on your site
Identify your real landing pages
In GA4 open Reports then Landing page and filter to organic search. These are the pages doing the first-impression work.
Check each answers its query
Take the top query for each page from Search Console and confirm the page answers it clearly above the fold.
Verify there is a next step
Every landing page needs an obvious action appropriate to the intent, not just a link back to the homepage.
Compare conversion rates
Rank landing pages by conversion rate, not sessions, to see which traffic is actually worth having.
