Keyword Research

Keyword research is the process of finding the terms your audience actually searches for, then judging each one by search volume, difficulty, intent and commercial value. It decides what you go on to create, so mistakes here waste every hour spent downstream.

Why it matters for your rankings

Keyword research is where most SEO budgets are won or lost, because it determines what gets built. Writing excellent content about terms nobody searches, or terms you cannot realistically rank for, is the most expensive mistake in the discipline.

The frequent error is optimising for volume. A term with ten thousand searches and a difficulty score you cannot touch for three years is worth less than five terms with two hundred searches each that you can win this quarter and that attract buyers. Research also has a shelf life. Search behaviour shifts with product categories, seasons and AI-driven query changes, so a keyword map built two years ago is describing a market that has since moved.

How to check it on your site

Start from your existing data

Search Console shows queries you already appear for. Terms ranking at positions 8 to 20 are the cheapest wins available.

Mine competitor gaps

Use Ahrefs Content Gap or Semrush Keyword Gap against three competitors to find terms they rank for and you do not.

Qualify by intent and difficulty

Filter out terms whose SERP you cannot match in format, and terms whose difficulty exceeds your current authority.

Map one primary term per page

Assign each target to a single URL to prevent cannibalisation before it starts.
