Search Console Property
A Search Console property is the site or section of a site you have verified ownership of. Domain properties cover every subdomain and protocol at once, while URL-prefix properties cover only one exact combination, which frequently splits your data unhelpfully.
Why it matters for your rankings
Property type decides whether your data is complete or fragmented. A URL-prefix property for https://www.example.com shows you nothing at all about the non-www version, the http version, or any subdomain you happen to run.
Sites configured this way routinely miss problems entirely, because the URLs generating errors sit in a property nobody ever created. Domain properties solve this by covering everything under the domain, at the cost of requiring DNS verification rather than a simple file upload. The other consideration is granularity. For large sites, adding URL-prefix properties for major sections alongside the domain property gives you per-section reporting that the aggregate view otherwise hides completely.
