Conversion Rate
Conversion rate is the share of visitors who complete a desired action, such as a purchase, form submission or call. In SEO it is what turns rankings into revenue, and it decides whether traffic growth is worth anything at all.
Why it matters for your rankings
Traffic without conversion is a vanity result. Doubling visitors to a page that converts at nothing produces exactly nothing, which is why rankings reports so often fail to match what the finance team sees.
Conversion also changes which keywords are worth pursuing. A term with a tenth of the volume but ten times the purchase intent is usually the better target, and you only know that by measuring outcomes rather than sessions. There is a feedback loop too. Pages that satisfy visitors tend to accumulate the engagement, repeat visits and links that support rankings, so conversion work and SEO work reinforce each other rather than competing for the same budget.
How to check it on your site
Define conversions in GA4
Mark the events that represent real business outcomes as key events. Without this, everything downstream is guesswork.
Report by landing page
In GA4 open Reports then Landing page, and add key event and revenue columns. Now you can see which organic entry points actually earn money.
Segment organic separately
Apply a session default channel group filter of Organic Search. Blended site-wide rates hide the channel's real performance.
Compare intent tiers
Group landing pages into informational, commercial and transactional, and compare conversion rates across them before deciding where to invest.
