Rich Snippet
A rich snippet is a search result enhanced with extra detail such as star ratings, prices, availability or FAQ dropdowns. They are generated from structured data on the page and typically earn noticeably higher click-through rates than a plain listing does.
Why it matters for your rankings
Rich snippets buy attention. A result showing a four-and-a-half star rating and a price stands out against plain blue links, and that visual weight lifts click-through without any ranking improvement.
They are also entirely earned rather than guaranteed. Correct structured data makes a page eligible, but Google decides case by case whether to show the enhancement, and it withdraws eligibility from sites whose markup misrepresents the page. The most common self-inflicted loss is review markup applied to a page with no genuine reviews, or prices in the schema that do not match the visible page. Both are treated as spam, and the resulting removal usually applies across the whole site.
How to check it on your site
Validate with the Rich Results Test
Run one URL per template and fix every error and warning it reports.
Check markup matches the page
Prices, ratings, availability and dates in structured data must match what a visitor actually sees.
Monitor the Enhancements report
Search Console reports structured data errors across the site and warns when eligibility is lost.
Only mark up what is real
Review markup requires genuine reviews. Fabricating them risks a sitewide structured data penalty.
