Black Hat SEO
Black hat SEO covers tactics that break search engine guidelines to win rankings, such as cloaking, keyword stuffing, hidden text, doorway pages and buying links. They can work briefly and carry a real risk of penalties or full removal from search results.
Why it matters for your rankings
The case against black hat tactics is not moral, it is arithmetic. They work until the specific loophole is closed, and every loophole eventually closes, usually without warning and often retroactively.
The recovery cost is what people underestimate. A manual action can take months to lift, and an algorithmic demotion has no appeals process at all. Businesses that built their pipeline on manipulated rankings discover the problem when revenue stops, not when the tactic is deployed. There is also an ownership trap: agencies that build spam links leave the liability behind when the contract ends. If you inherit a site, its history is now your problem, which is why a backlink audit belongs in any acquisition or agency handover.
How to check it on your site
Check for manual actions
In Google Search Console open Security & Manual Actions. Anything listed here is an explicit human penalty and takes priority over all other SEO work.
Compare rendered and raw HTML
View source and compare with the rendered DOM in DevTools. Large discrepancies can indicate cloaking, sometimes installed by a compromised plugin rather than deliberately.
Look for hidden text
Search the CSS for display:none, font-size:0 or text coloured to match the background around keyword-heavy blocks.
Audit the link profile for purchases
Sudden bursts of links with identical commercial anchors from unrelated sites are the clearest signature of a paid campaign.
